Patrick is a Medical Affairs consultant with over 30 years of experience within the pharmaceutical industry. His area of focus and expertise is Medical Affairs functional capabilities, where he helps organizations harmonize and transform those capabilities to enhance efficiencies, increase productivity, and create value.
Patrick is currently the CEO of phactMI, a non-profit association representing medical information leadership of 30+ pharma companies. PhactMI is an industry-wide consortium that focuses on increasing the awareness, credibility, and access to medical information.
Prior to joining phactMI, Patrick worked at Bristol-Myers Squibb where he held various leadership roles within the R&D organization. He led the US Clinical Site Monitoring organization in R&D operations and implemented the original Oncology and Immunocience field Medical teams in US Medical Affairs. Patrick’s global achievement at BMS was leading the implementation of a Field Medical capability in Europe, in support of several key launches.
Patrick was a member of the Global Medical leadership team and provided executive sponsorship for several key initiatives and programs including: developing new leaders through the BMS-Rutgers PharmD program; implementing new global systems and capabilities in support of a multichannel, customer centric strategy; and helping to transform the organization to a specialty care biopharma model.
Just prior to leaving BMS, Patrick led the globalization of the Medical Information capability by harmonizing customer engagement through the implementation of a global medical contact center, centralizing medical content creation and curation, and implementing a multichannel technology solution.
Patrick is a Physician Assistant by training and holds a Masters of Science degree in business administration and human resources management.
Sanjay balances the clinical with the commercial to direct service and platform innovation at VML Health. He has worked in pharmaceutical services for several years in a number of roles, supporting a wide range of pharmaceutical companies with their digital and technology initiatives. Sanjay has a degree in Biochemistry from the University of London, a degree in Medicine from Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital, and an MBA from Harvard University. His first post-graduate thesis on pharma brand-management was developed in collaboration with several leading Pharma companies. His second post-graduate thesis was a study on why most healthcare communication agencies eventually fail. Sanjay is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in the UK.
Raphael is founder of a consulting firm that supports medical device companies with high quality services in the areas of Medical Affairs & Governance, Clinical Research, Regulatory Affairs and Business Development. In addition, with access to a continuously growing international network of industry professionals and by partnering with chartered psychologists, his firm provides unique headhunting services for start-ups, scale-ups as well as mature companies.
During his 20+ years corporate career he has held a variety of leadership positions in Medical Affairs and Clinical Research. While working for Medtronic, Boston Scientific, KCI/Acelity and Mölnlycke Healthcare he gained vast experience in designing, building and leading international teams. In his last role as Chief Medical Officer he was the architect of a synergetic global cluster consisting out of Global Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, Clinical Evidence Strategy and Health Economics & Reimbursement. In that capacity and with new regulations in Europe, new technologies entering the healthcare realm and stringent reimbursement requirements, he has initiated and led initiatives strengthening and expanding Medical Affairs capabilities.
With his corporate experience and current involvement in organizations that are in the process of redefining the role of Medical Affairs as a business function, Raphael provides advice on establishing a Medical Governance structure to ensure medical-scientific oversight over processes ranging from new product development to the skills training of new users. As member of the MAPS MedTech FAWG he aims to promote the exchange of experiences among Medical Affairs professionals both in pharma and MedTech.
Raphael holds a medical degree from the Free University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Dr. Gail Cawkwell has served as SVP, Medical Affairs, Safety & Pharmacovigilance of Intercept Pharmaceuticals since September 2018, having previously served as SVP, Medical Affairs since February 2018. Prior to joining Intercept, Dr. Cawkwell worked for Purdue Pharma L.P., where she served as Special Advisor to the Board of Directors from September 2017 to February 2018, Chief Medical Officer from January 2015 to September 2017 and VP, Medical Affairs from November 2014 to January 2015. From 2000 to November 2014, Dr. Cawkwell served in a number of roles of increasing responsibility at Pfizer Inc., including most recently as Vice President Medicine Team Lead for Pfizer’s tofacitinib franchise. Dr. Cawkwell also served as a Clinical Instructor of Pediatrics at Columbia Presbyterian Health Center from 2002 to 2015 and previously held several other clinical and academic posts. Dr. Cawkwell received her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati, her M.D. from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and her bachelor’s degree from Duke University
